CoARA calls on EU to anchor research assessment reform principles in ERA Act
In response to the recent ERA Act Consultation, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) has welcomed the European Commission’s initiative to introduce an ERA Act and has expressed strong support for its overarching objective of reinforcing coherence, trust, and effectiveness within the European Research Area (ERA). CoARA emphasises that reforming research assessment is a core enabler for achieving key ERA goals, including research excellence, openness, inclusiveness, and global competitiveness.
In its contribution, CoARA urges the European Commission to recognise the principles set out in the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment (ARRA) within the ERA Act as the primary reference framework for policy harmonisation in the field of research assessment. According to CoARA, embedding ARRA’s shared principles at the legislative level would foster greater alignment across Member States and institutions, while avoiding fragmented or conflicting approaches to assessing research and researchers.
