EC's open access publishing platform expands eligibility to researchers in 11 countries
Open Research Europe (ORE), the open access publishing platform launched by the European Commission in 2021, is expanding beyond EU-funded research to welcome work by affiliated researchers across 11 European countries. Eligible researchers will be able to publish without fees, with their work freely available to readers.
The new model of ORE, enabled by collective funding, brings together 16 research funding and performing organisations across Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, alongside the European Commission. Together, the partners support the long-term development of ORE, with nearly €17 million committed for the years 2026-2031, including up to €10 million from the European Commission.
The expanded eligibility builds on ORE’s existing commitment to immediate open access and transparent peer review. By removing publication fees for eligible researchers and opening the platform to a broader community, this new model aims to make open scholarly publishing more accessible across Europe.
This next phase also marks an important step in developing a collective European approach to open scholarly publishing, bringing researchers, funders and research infrastructure together around a shared commitment to making scientific knowledge openly available.
Open Research Europe was launched by the European Commission in 2021 to provide researchers funded through EU research and innovation programmes with a high-quality, open access publishing venue. The platform was designed around the principles of open access, transparency and open peer review, with no publication fees for eligible authors.
