REA publishes mapping of research infrastructures for climate resilience
The European Commission's Research Executive Agency (REA) has recently published a report on 'Research Infrastructures for climate resilience: Mapping the European portfolio across climate risks and adaptation pathways'.
Climate change is increasingly recognised as a systemic risk affecting Europe's environment, economy, infrastructure and societal well-being. In response, climate resilience has become a strategic priority of the European Union, reflected in initiatives such as the European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA), the EU Adaptation Strategy and the emerging European Integrated Framework for Climate Resilience and Risk Management. Within this context, Research Infrastructures (RIs) provide essential capabilities for understanding, anticipating and responding to climate risks.
The European Research Infrastructures climate resilience portfolio comprises 38 projects and more than €300 million in EU funding. This report examines whether and how this intellectual and financial investment contributes to European climate resilience priorities; and it identifies opportunities for future Framework Programmes. The analysis shows that Europe has developed a mature and highly interconnected Research Infrastructure landscape that is broadly aligned with the priorities identified by EUCRA. Environmental Research Infrastructures, supported by increasingly sophisticated digital services and modelling platforms, provide a strong scientific foundation for climate resilience policies and risk management. Projects in the portfolio hold major strengths in observation, monitoring and foresight capacities, which may help translate scientific insights into operational, economic and societal benefits.
