EU joins International Energy Agency Cities and Energy Storage Technology Collaboration Programmes
Following a recent Commission Decision, the EU will join the Cities Technology Collaboration Programme (Cities TCP). This initiative supports cities worldwide in accelerating their decarbonisation pathways. It builds on existing urban-focused programmes and connects them with the concrete needs of cities in different regions, helping local authorities make informed decisions and implement effective measures. Through Cities TCP, the Commission aims at reinforcing its international cooperation under the Urban Transitions Mission – the global extension of the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities – and create strong links with the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) European Partnership.
In parallel, the EU will also participate in the Energy Storage Technology Collaboration Programme (Energy Storage TCP). This programme promotes research, development, deployment and integration of energy storage technologies – electrical, thermal and chemical – as a key pillar of a flexible, efficient and sustainable energy system. By advancing these technologies, Energy Storage TCP supports the increased uptake of renewable energy, ensuring it can be stored and used when and where it is needed. The collaboration will directly contribute to the EU’s research and innovation priorities on energy storage, including those set out under the ‘Climate, Energy and Mobility’ cluster of Horizon Europe.
