Marie Curie Alumni Association welcomes EU Proposal for a framework on science diplomacy
The Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) has welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for a Council Recommendation on a European Union framework for science diplomacy. In its response to the proposal, the MCAA expressed its appreciation for being recognised as a relevant network of Union mobility schemes. The association described the initiative as an important milestone in strengthening the EU’s strategic, scientific, and geopolitical influence, while also promoting multilateralism.
As a bottom-up, researcher-led community with a global presence, the MCAA sees itself as a strong example of science diplomacy in action. Through international mobility, interdisciplinary cooperation, and intercultural exchange, its members demonstrate how science can build trust, encourage the sharing of knowledge, and promote European values across the world.
The association’s active role in the European Research Area (ERA) Forum Stakeholder Group 4, the International Science Council (ISC), and the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance further highlights its commitment to advancing global cooperation both within and beyond the ERA. According to the MCAA, these engagements position the organisation as an important stakeholder in shaping and implementing science diplomacy actions at both European and international levels.
While welcoming the Commission’s initiative and calling on Member States to support it, the MCAA also urged policymakers to show greater ambition. The association stressed that the proposed Council Recommendation should include clearer implementation pathways, dedicated resources, and stronger links to existing EU policy instruments in order to deliver meaningful change.
