Science Europe calls for stronger minimum standards to improve research careers across Europe
Science Europe has outlined a new set of recommendations aimed at strengthening the research ecosystem and making it more attractive, supportive, and responsive to the needs of research talent across Europe.
The recommendations mark an important step forward in the shared effort to create conditions that help develop, attract, and retain skilled research professionals. They are structured around three interconnected areas: Working Conditions and Employment, Research Environment, and Professional Development, Well-being, and Supporting Infrastructure.
According to Science Europe, these recommendations reflect a common understanding among its Member Organisations that a shared approach to minimum standards is essential for continued progress and effective advocacy. By promoting fair salaries, robust social security, transparent career pathways, and conditions that support work–life balance, research organisations can better enable professionals to deliver excellent and impactful research.
The document also highlights a range of good practice examples from across the European Research Area, showing that positive developments are already underway. However, Science Europe stresses that isolated examples of progress are not enough. Instead, the focus must now shift from individual initiatives to systemic change in key areas through structured co-ordination, collaboration, and sustained advocacy towards national governments and European institutions.
